Daniel Paul Gustafson is an attorney based in Madison, Wisconsin, specializing in environmental and natural resources law, energy and utilities, and administrative law. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1996, following a Master of Science in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. A Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Lawrence University in 1985. He was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar in 1996 and has maintained an active license since then. From 1996 to 2013, Gustafson was a partner at Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, a law firm established in 1879 with offices in Madison and Milwaukee.
The firm offers a full array of legal services to businesses, governments, nonprofits, and individuals. During his tenure, Gustafson focused on environmental and natural resources law, energy and utilities, and administrative law. In 2013, he transitioned to Midwest Environmental Advocates Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Wisconsin's environment through legal advocacy. As a senior staff attorney, he continues to represent clients in environmental matters. Throughout his career, Gustafson has been actively involved in various professional organizations.
He served as the Chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin's Energy & Telecommunications Law Section from 2011 to 2012 and was a member of the Legal Assistance Committee from 2002 to 2008. He has also been a member of the Eau Claire County Bar Association since 2013, serving as its President and Director. Additionally, he has been involved with the American Bar Association's Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources since 1996. Gustafson's contributions to the legal community have been recognized through several honors. In 2011, he was named a "Best Lawyer" in Environmental Law and Energy Law by The Best Lawyers in America.
In 2019, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Minnesota Federal Bar Association for his work on the Pro Se Project, which coordinates volunteer representation for pro se litigants in federal court. This project has served over 1,370 individuals within its first decade — In his personal life, Gustafson resides in Madison, Wisconsin. He is married and has children. Outside of his professional endeavors, he enjoys spending time with his family and engaging in various outdoor activities. His commitment to environmental advocacy and public service continues to be a driving force in his career and personal life.
