About D. John

D. John Sauer built an unusual academic foundation before he ever set foot in a courtroom. He earned both a B.A. in philosophy and a B.S. in engineering from Duke University, then returned to study philosophy at the graduate level, taking an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame. He completed his legal training at Harvard Law School, where he gained the credentials that would carry him into public service.

His public career includes a high-profile role in 2017, when he served as Solicitor General of Missouri in the Missouri Lawyer General s Office. In that capacity he took on the work commonly assigned to a solicitor general: crafting appellate briefs, advising on legal strategy for the state, and advancing the government’s positions in complex legal disputes. The post placed him at the intersection of constitutional questions, statutory interpretation, and the practical demands of government litigation.

Sauer’s dual background in philosophy and engineering shapes the way he approaches legal problems. Philosophy sharpened his facility for argument and analytical rigor. Engineering trained him in structured problem solving and attention to technical detail. Those strands come together in his written work and courtroom presentations, where precision matters as much as persuasion.

Colleagues and court records show a lawyer attuned to the mechanics of appellate practice. His tenure as Solicitor General required translating broad legal issues into focused questions for appeal. He worked on briefing and case selection, and he had to prioritize issues the state would advance when pressing its positions through the appeals process. That work demanded both legal judgment and a practical sense of which cases warranted the state’s resources.

Outside the office, Sauer’s education gives him a range of reference points when cases raise philosophical or technical questions. He has moved between abstract legal doctrines and concrete statutory or regulatory disputes. His experience in the Attorney General’s office exposed him to litigation on behalf of the state and to the institutional concerns that arise when government entities defend statutes or policies.

As of 2026 he continues his work at the Missouri Lawyer General s Office, where his practice centers on appellate litigation and representing state interests in court.
