About Cynthia
Cynthia Petersen trained in the Midwest. She took an interdisciplinary route in college, studying English, history, drama, art and art history at Northwestern College of Iowa and earning a B.A. in 1987. She then turned to law and received her J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1997.
After law school Petersen built a practice grounded in the technical side of family and retirement plan matters. Her career path brought her into regular contact with matrimonial law and the division of retirement assets. Over time she developed particular familiarity with Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, plan documents and the federal rules that govern pension and retirement plan distributions.
Petersen has been active in the Will County legal community for more than two decades. She holds membership in the Will County Bar Association, a connection that dates to 2002 and continues. That local involvement has kept her engaged in court procedures and has informed her work as an expert in plan administration disputes.
The attorney also serves in a court-appointed capacity. She is certified as an Expert Witness for the Retirement Plan Division in Will County, Illinois. In that role she has prepared expert opinions and reports for litigation involving plan interpretation, benefit calculations and compliance with plan terms. Her certification is tied to court proceedings in Will County, where she has been called on to explain plan provisions and calculation methods to judges and counsel.
Petersen practices under the name Petersen Law and QDROs LLC. Her practice handles the documentation and technical analysis needed when retirement assets must be divided. She works with plan administrators, actuaries and family law attorneys to translate plan language into the distribution directives courts require. Her approach emphasizes clarity and accuracy in paperwork that can affect long-term retirement income.
Colleagues and clients describe her work as technically oriented and detail driven. She maintains an active presence in Illinois courts through expert testimony and filings. Today she continues to represent clients and provide expert services through Petersen Law and QDROs LLC, concentrating on retirement plan division and related court matters.
