About Colleen
Colleen McCoy draws on a liberal arts background and three years of law school training to shape a practical approach to dispute resolution. She earned a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of New Mexico in 1997 and completed her J.D. at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2003. Those studies inform how she reads people and structures legal arguments.
Her undergraduate work in psychology and philosophy preceded law school by several years. The combination of those disciplines and legal training gives her a steady, analytical perspective. During and after law school she began building ties in the Denver legal community, joining local and statewide bar organizations and interdisciplinary groups that bring lawyers together with professionals from other fields.
McCoy’s professional memberships extend across a range of organizations. She has been a member of the Colorado Bar Association since 2001 and of the Denver Bar Association since 2008. She joined the Faculty of Federal Advocates in 2012. More recent memberships include the Minorou Yasui Inn of Court and the Metro Denver Interdisciplinary Committee, both beginning in 2017, and The MAC and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts in 2018. She was also a member of the Continental Divide Bar Association from 2006 to 2008. These affiliations reflect steady engagement with peers and with cross-disciplinary problem solving.
She holds certifications that qualify her to serve in neutral roles in disputes. McCoy has a PC/DM credential through the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and a mediator certification from the Colorado Bar Association. Those credentials allow her to accept cases that require formal mediation or structured coordination between parties and professionals.
Over the years she has taken part in local committees and forums that bring together judges, attorneys, mental health professionals and others who work on family and civil matters. That work has informed her practice style. She approaches cases with attention to procedure and to the practical needs of clients and the professionals who work with them.
Colleen McCoy maintains an active practice in the Denver area that centers on mediation, interdisciplinary case work and matters commonly addressed in family courts. Her current work focuses on resolving disputes through negotiated and neutral processes.
