About Colby

Colby Cowherd earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of Kentucky in 2004. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Northern Kentucky University in 2012. Those academic years set a steady path from a liberal arts background into legal practice.

He began his legal career in 2013 as an associate at Taliaferro, Carran & Keys. The early years of practice put him in the middle of courtroom preparation and client counseling. He moved into partnership at the same firm in 2016 when the practice became Taliaferro, Carran & Cowherd. That change reflected an increased role in case strategy and firm management.

In 2021 he joined O Hara Taylor Sloan Cassidy Beck as a partner. The move placed him in a larger firm structure and expanded the geographic reach of his practice. Colleagues describe him as steady under pressure and methodical in his approach to litigation and court proceedings.

He is admitted to practice in Kentucky and Ohio and holds admissions that allow appearances in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has handled matters that required navigation of both state and federal procedures. Those admissions inform how he prepares cases and selects forums for his clients.

Cowherd’s work spans trial-level litigation and appellate matters. He has experience preparing briefs, arguing motions, and managing discovery. He also spends time on client counseling and pretrial planning. His background in anthropology is a recurring influence; he often comments that it shaped the way he listens for important factual detail and context when preparing a case.

Outside the courtroom he has taken on responsibilities typical of firm partners, including mentoring junior lawyers and helping oversee case workflows. He maintains a practice that moves between courtroom appearances and office-based strategy sessions. He currently practices at O Hara Taylor Sloan Cassidy Beck, where he handles litigation in both state and federal courts.
