About Cody
Cody Smith earned his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2013 after completing undergraduate studies at Wichita State University in 2007. Those years on campus gave him time to move from classroom theory to courtroom practice. He supplemented coursework with practical roles that exposed him to litigation and regulatory work early on.
While still in law school and immediately afterward, Smith held a string of clerk and research positions that shaped his approach to legal problems. He worked as a research assistant for the Kansas Insurance Exchange Legal Subgroup in 2011, and took on law clerk roles that same year and in 2012. He served as an independent contractor and legal writer for Rust Consulting in 2012 and spent time clerking at local law offices, gaining hands-on exposure to client work and courtroom preparation.
Smith’s post-graduate legal career began in private practice. He joined the Law Offices of Geisert, Wunsch, Watkins & Graffman as an associate in 2013. Three years later he became a partner at the Law Offices of Geisert, Graffman & Smith, P.A., a role he held until moving into practice at Graffman & Smith, LLC in 2018. He works out of the firm’s primary office and an appointments-only satellite location, handling matters for clients across the region.
He holds admission to the Kansas bar and to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. He is also listed as a licensed lawyer with the United States Tax Court. Smith maintains active memberships in several professional organizations, including the Kansas Bar Association, the Wichita Bar Association, the Reno County and Kingman County Bar Associations, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers, and the City Lawyer Association of Kansas. He serves on the Hutchinson Community College Paralegal Advisory Committee.
Smith’s practice covers consumer bankruptcy and related tax matters, together with general litigation in state and federal forums. His background includes time as a litigation paralegal at Mayer Brown, which provided early exposure to complex civil procedures, and other positions that strengthened his skills in legal research, drafting, and client communication. Colleagues describe him as steady in court and methodical in case preparation.
He practices from Graffman & Smith, LLC, operating from both the main office and an appointments-only satellite office, and handles consumer bankruptcy, tax, and litigation matters in Kansas and federal court.
