About Cody L.
Cody L. Cofer has practiced criminal law in Texas for more than a decade. His résumé moves through prosecution, private defense and federal public defense work. Each stop added a new set of courtroom skills and a sharper sense of how criminal cases play out from charge to appeal.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from Baylor University in 2005 and took his law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2008. Those early years framed a career that has combined courtroom work and written advocacy. The communication training from his undergraduate degree informs how he prepares witnesses and argues before judges and juries.
Cofer began his post-law school career in county government. In 2009 he served as an assistant county lawyer and prosecutor in the Henderson County Lawyer's Office. That role put him on the front line of misdemeanor and felony prosecutions and offered regular experience in court procedures, charging decisions and plea negotiations.
In 2011 Cofer shifted to private practice as a lead criminal trial and appellate lawyer at Cofer Law, PC. There he ran trials and prepared appellate briefs. The work required translating facts into persuasive trial themes and then, when necessary, framing legal errors for appellate review. Over time he handled a mix of state-level criminal matters and appeals arising from those proceedings.
His next move took him into the federal system. In 2016 Cofer joined the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Northern District of Texas as an assistant federal public defender. That position involved representing federal defendants and developing litigation strategies in a different procedural setting. It broadened his litigation experience and exposed him to federal sentencing practice and circuit-level appeals.
In 2018 he became a partner at Cofer Luster Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is board certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is admitted to practice in Texas and before the Fifth Circuit. Those credentials reflect his courtroom and appellate experience rather than attendance at awards or honors.
Cofer’s practice continues to combine trial work and appellate advocacy. He represents clients in state and federal criminal matters, handling both jury trials and post-conviction appeals in Texas and federal courts.
