About Christopher G. Browning

Christopher G. Browning Jr. is a seasoned litigator based in Raleigh, North Carolina, specializing in appellate practice, complex commercial litigation, business torts, environmental disputes, and governmental relations. He has been a member of the North Carolina State Bar since 1986. Browning earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1986. He was a research editor for the North Carolina Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.

He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtained in 1983. From 2004 to 2011, Browning served as the first Solicitor General for the State of North Carolina. In this role, he established policies and procedures for the office and managed all civil appeals involving the state. He argued five times before the U.S. Supreme Court and multiple times before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Prior to his tenure as Solicitor General, Browning was a partner at a law firm where he focused on complex litigation matters. Notably, he was part of a trial team handling one of the longest war crimes proceedings in history, a case tried in The Hague before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Browning is among the first attorneys certified as an appellate practice specialist by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. He has served as chair of the Appellate Rules Committee for the North Carolina Bar Association and as North Carolina's representative to the Fourth Circuit's Advisory Committee on Rules and Procedures.

He has also served as chair of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division Lawyers Conference and currently serves on the Appellate Practice Specialization Committee of the North Carolina State Bar. In August 2021, Browning was named chair of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division, focusing on protecting judges through training, education, and resources. He has taught appellate practice at Duke University School of Law as a senior lecturing fellow and is a frequent speaker on appellate practice, complex litigation, and Supreme Court procedures. Browning is recognized by several industry authorities for his experience in appellate law, including Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America®, and Super Lawyers North Carolina. He has been selected to Super Lawyers from 2013 to 2023 and 2026.
