About Charles Sheldon
Charles Sheldon Barquist is a seasoned attorney admitted to practice law in both California and New York. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1979 and to the State Bar of California in 1988, holding bar numbers 1459759 and 133785, respectively. His license status in both states is active. Mr. Barquist is a partner at Maschoff Brennan, a mid-sized intellectual property law firm located in Los Angeles, California. He has over four decades of experience in patent litigation, representing clients in district courts and before the International Trade Commission.
Mr. Barquist earned his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1978. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction and high honors in History in 1975. After earning his law degree, he clerked for the Honorable Milton Pollack in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
His practice areas include patent litigation, intellectual property disputes, antitrust, and unfair competition. He has handled cases involving technologies such as smartphones, virtual cameras, medical lasers, hard disk drives, infrared thermometers, rechargeable batteries, digital satellite receivers, and environmental stress screening equipment. His work encompasses all stages of litigation, including hearings, appeals, negotiations, and trials.
Throughout his career, Mr. Barquist has represented clients in various jurisdictions, including Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and California, with appearances in San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. He has also conducted numerous adversarial licensing negotiations with patent holders in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Notably, he led a team that secured a $35 million settlement in a patent infringement action in Minnesota for Angeion Corporation, a manufacturer of implantable defibrillators.
Mr. Barquist is an active member of the legal community. He has served as president of the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, chairman of the USC Gould School of Law Intellectual Property Institute, and chairman of the Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Section and the International Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He has also served as Chair of the Institute for Corporate Counsel in Los Angeles and is currently a member of its Board of Governors. He has been recognized as a Southern California "Super Lawyer" every year from 2004 through 2021 and was named the Best Lawyers® 2022 Litigation – Patent "Lawyer of the Year" in Orange County. He is also the editor of the 3rd edition of Practising Law Institute’s Patent Litigation treatise, published in October 2015.
