About Charles S. McCowan
Charles S. McCowan Jr. built his legal foundation at Louisiana State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1964 and a Juris Doctor from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1967. Those years placed him among a generation of lawyers who entered practice during a time of change in both law and society. The formal training he received at LSU set the stage for a long career that bridges military service and private practice.
Soon after graduating from law school, McCowan served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army in 1967. That early period of service exposed him to the demands of government practice and courtroom procedure. He later transitioned into civilian practice and over the decades practiced in both trial courts and appellate venues.
He holds admissions across multiple federal and state forums, including the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Western and Middle Districts of Louisiana, in addition to the state bar of Louisiana. Those credentials reflect a seasoned handling of litigation that has ranged from district court proceedings to appellate briefing and argument.
McCowan maintains ties to a broad swath of professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Louisiana Bar Foundation, and he holds membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates and the International Society of Barristers as an emeritus fellow. He also belongs to local and national bar associations, including the Baton Rouge Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He participates in the Dean Henry George McMahon American Inn of Court.
Longstanding involvement in trial groups and Inns of Court has shaped how McCowan approaches cases. His peers have placed him in organizations that emphasize courtroom practice, ethics and mentoring. Over time he has moved into roles that mix advocacy with advising younger lawyers on trial technique and appellate preparation.
Today McCowan is Of Counsel at Kean Miller LLP. In that capacity he blends courtroom experience and appellate knowledge to support litigation teams. Colleagues consult him on procedural questions and complex civil matters. He continues to appear and file in federal and state courts as needed.
In practice he concentrates on civil and appellate litigation and provides counsel to trial teams on procedural and evidentiary matters.
