About Charles Edwin
Charles Edwin Runyan built a scientific foundation before he turned to law. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from Arizona State University in 1984. He completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at Texas A&M University in 1988 and did work at Princeton University in 1994. He returned to school for a J.D. from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1995.
After law school he moved quickly into intellectual property practice. He began as a patent intern in 1996 at Benman, Collins & Sawyer. Two years later he joined Gallagher & Kennedy as an associate. He spent time in industry as counsel for ExxonMobil Chemical Company in 2000 and then returned to private practice as a senior associate with Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in 2003. By 2005 he was patent counsel at Guidant Corporation, handling prosecution and related matters.
Runyan’s career shifted toward in-house patent work and leadership roles in the following decade. He served as senior counsel for patents at Abbott Vascular in 2006. He opened Runyan Law in 2008 and continued to serve in senior patent roles at major companies. In 2011 he led patent prosecution at Gallagher & Kennedy. In 2013 he joined Becton Dickinson as a division staff lawyer in intellectual property. He has also been associated with Integrity Patent Group, PLC in a managing capacity since 2018. The mix of firm and corporate experience has given him long-running exposure to both prosecution and client-side patent strategy.
He is admitted to practice in Arizona and Texas and is licensed in California. He has been registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office since 1997. He became a member of the Arizona State Bar in 1998 and joined the Texas State Bar in 2001. He is an active attorney and continues to maintain registrations and memberships that reflect work across multiple jurisdictions.
His work over the years centers on patent prosecution and related intellectual property services. He has handled prosecution in private firms and in-house, and he has worked on patent matters for both device and chemical companies. He now operates Runyan Law and provides patent prosecution and intellectual property counseling as his current practice focus.
