About Carole
Carole Bess earned her Juris Doctor from Samford University in 1998. She completed her legal studies after earlier coursework in the mid-1990s, entering the bar shortly thereafter and beginning a career that blends private practice with civic involvement. Her academic background provided a conventional path into courtroom work and client counseling.
Early in her career Bess took on a mix of matters typical for a small-firm practitioner. She has long preferred hands-on casework over abstract policy debates. That approach led to a notable recognition in 2007 when the Brevard County Bar Association presented her with a Pro Bono Award. The prize reflected a period in which she increased her unpaid client work and helped expand access to counsel for people who otherwise would have faced the courts alone.
Bess’s professional activities broadened into local legal governance and community service. Since 2012 she has served on the Pro Se Committee, a role that keeps her engaged with issues affecting self-represented litigants and the procedural barriers they encounter. Members of the committee work to streamline forms, clarify court rules for nonlawyers and design systems that reduce needless delays. Her ongoing committee service suggests an interest in practical reform rather than theoretical change.
She practices at Bess & Freyberg, P.A., a small firm where she manages client relationships and oversees case strategy. Colleagues describe her approach as steady and pragmatic. She is comfortable in motion-intensive settings: depositions, scheduling conferences and courthouse appearances occupy a predictable share of her weekdays. The firm’s environment has allowed her to combine routine litigation tasks with community-oriented projects.
Outside the office Bess’s award and committee work form a through line. The pro bono honor from 2007 remains an early public marker of a career that keeps returning to access-to-justice issues. Her ongoing committee role also gives her a platform to advise on court procedures and to mentor newer lawyers who take on pro se assistance.
She now maintains a private practice at Bess & Freyberg, P.A., where she handles client matters and continues pro bono work and service to self-represented litigants.
