About Carl N

Carl N Lauer built a legal path that begins in liberal arts and moves through military service to private practice. He earned a B.A. in Government from Hamilton College in 1982 and completed his J.D. at Washington & Lee University in 1985. Those academic years set the groundwork for a career that has spanned courtroom work and law firm partnership.

After law school, Lauer served as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He held the rank of Captain from 1986 to 1989. Those three years in uniform placed him on active legal duty early in his career. He also played on the All-Army Rugby Football Club during 1987 and 1988, an extracurricular commitment that ran alongside his JAG responsibilities.

Following active service, Lauer moved into private practice in Virginia. He is a partner at Dulaney, Lauer & Thomas, LLP. Over time he has taken on the managerial and client-facing responsibilities that come with partnership. He represents clients in contested matters and participates in trial preparation and litigation strategy at the firm.

Lauer maintains memberships in professional groups focused on litigation. He belongs to the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the American Trial Lawyers Association. Those affiliations indicate continued engagement with the trial bar and with peers who practice contested civil matters. He attends association events and contributes to the professional network that supports trial attorneys in the region.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in the courtroom and steady in case management. He approaches litigation with an emphasis on preparation. He prioritizes fact development and practical courtroom tactics rather than legal showmanship. That approach reflects both his military training and years spent handling adversarial proceedings.

At Dulaney, Lauer & Thomas, LLP he shares responsibility for case oversight and client counsel. The firm handles a range of civil disputes. Lauer’s role as partner involves supervising litigation teams, coordinating with co-counsel, and advising clients on procedural and substantive issues that arise in the course of litigation.

Outside the office he has kept ties to the military community and to former teammates from his rugby days. He also remains active in the trial lawyer associations that connect him to ongoing developments in trial practice and civil litigation. He currently practices at Dulaney, Lauer & Thomas, LLP, where he handles trial and litigation matters.
