About Carl Adam

Carl Adam Valenstein built a legal education that spans two of the country’s older institutions. He earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1979 and took his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, completing his J.D. in 1983. Those years set the stage for a career that runs between litigation rooms and classroom clinics.

He began practicing in the 1980s and gained admission to the District of Columbia Bar in 1983. Over time he has added credentials in multiple jurisdictions and now holds licenses in the District of Columbia, New York and Massachusetts. He has combined private practice and academic involvement throughout his career.

Valenstein has served as a partner at several major law firms. In 2008 he joined Bingham McCutchen as a partner. He later moved to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where he is listed as a partner. Those roles have included counseling corporate clients on cross-border disputes and representing parties in complex commercial matters. He has also maintained an academic presence. At the University of Michigan Law School he served as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of law in the International Transactions Clinic, teaching students practical skills tied to international deals and disputes.

Professional associations are a regular feature of his resume. He is a board member and pro bono counsel for Boston International Arbitration Counsel and serves as Co-Chair of the International Section of the Boston Bar Association. He holds memberships in both the International and Business Law Sections of the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the Maritime Law Association. Those affiliations reflect an ongoing engagement in international and maritime legal networks.

Colleagues describe a lawyer who moves comfortably between arbitration panels and courtroom settings, and who can explain complex jurisdictional issues to clients and students alike. He has worked on cross-border arbitration matters and on disputes that implicate maritime rules; his participation in arbitration and maritime groups parallels that work. His teaching at Michigan gave students exposure to transactional and dispute-resolution work on an international scale. That mix of practice and teaching keeps him plugged into both the practical demands of clients and the evolving issues that inform classroom discussion.

He maintains an office at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP and continues to accept matters that raise international arbitration, cross-border commercial disputes and maritime law questions. He currently practices at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, focusing on international arbitration, cross-border commercial disputes and maritime law.
