About C. Thomas
C. Thomas Ludden combines a classical undergraduate education with graduate training in law and business. He earned a B.A. in Latin, Ancient Greek and Economics from Dickinson College in 1986. He completed both a J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School and an M.B.A. at the University of Michigan in 1990, studying law and finance and accounting alongside one another. That unusual pairing of disciplines has shaped the way he approaches appellate work.
After finishing law school, Ludden began practicing in Michigan. He has been involved in professional organizations since 1991 and has spent his career working inside the state’s legal community. He joined Lipson Neilson P.C. early in his career and rose through the ranks. In 1998 he became a partner and took on the role of head of the firm’s appellate practice.
His practice centers on appeals and post-trial proceedings. He writes and argues briefs, handles legal research, and prepares clients for oral argument. Colleagues describe his work as methodical. He emphasizes careful record review and precise legal writing. The background in economics and accounting informs his handling of cases that turn on financial records or complex transactional histories.
Over the years Ludden has worked on a range of matters that move from the trial court to higher tribunals. He represents businesses and individuals in cases that require focused appellate strategy rather than broad trial-level advocacy. His role at Lipson Neilson involves supervising appellate briefs, mentoring other attorneys on appellate technique, and stepping into argument when a case requires experienced appellate advocacy.
Ludden also brings an academic curiosity to his work. His undergraduate study of classical languages feeds a respect for structure and clarity in drafting. His M.B.A. study of finance and accounting gives him a practical lens when legal issues intersect with financial questions. These strands come together in the appellate practice he leads: exacting brief-writing, disciplined analysis and an eye for the argument that will persuade appellate judges.
He has maintained a steady presence in Michigan’s legal scene for decades, balancing casework with firm leadership responsibilities. He currently practices at Lipson Neilson P.C., where he leads the firm’s appellate practice.
