About C. Douglas

C. Douglas Welty trained in two different parts of the country. He earned his B.A. from Rice University and later took his law degree from the University of Virginia. Those schools bookend an educational path that led him back to Virginia, where he has practiced law for decades.

He joined the Virginia bar in 1988 and has remained an active member of the Virginia State Bar since then. Early in his career he concentrated on matters that touch ordinary families—estate planning, trusts and probate. Over time he added credentials that reflect that steady focus. He is an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP®) through the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils and is certified as an Estate Planning Law Specialist (EPLS) by the Estate Law Specialist Board.

His practice blends technical work and client counseling. He drafts wills and trust documents, handles estate administration and advises on tax considerations tied to wealth transfer. He spends time preparing plans meant to avoid disputes and to make transitions smoother for beneficiaries. He also addresses the paperwork and court filings that follow a death in a family, helping lay out options for executors and trustees.

He has maintained professional ties to the local estate planning community. He is a member of the Northern Virginia Estate Planning Council and the McLean Estate Planning Council. Since 2006 he has been listed as an allied lawyer with the Alliance Defending Freedom, a role he continues to hold. Those memberships keep him plugged into local discussions about best practices and changing law.

He keeps an office in Colonial Place I, where he meets clients and manages case files. Colleagues describe him as methodical and steady. Clients who seek him out often want clear, conservative plans rather than experimental strategies. He has built a practice that emphasizes careful drafting, clear client instructions and practical administration of estates.

After more than three decades in practice, he continues to handle estate planning and related matters for individuals and families in Virginia. He is currently practicing in Virginia and focuses on estate planning, trust drafting and probate administration.
