About Bobby D.
Bobby D. Mills has spent more than three decades working in the field of family law. He studied history and political science as an undergraduate and moved quickly into law school. He earned his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1982 and his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1985.
His early legal work included military service. In 1986 he served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army. That experience placed him in courtrooms and counsel rooms when he was still near the start of his career. After leaving active military service he returned to civilian practice and joined the Law Office of Mark Sullivan, P.A., as an associate in 1991.
His practice evolved over the 1990s. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Lawyers in 1997. A year later the North Carolina State Bar recognized him as a Board Certified Specialist in Family Law. Those credentials coincided with a move into partnership. In 1999 he became a partner at Herring & Mills, PLLC, where he remained involved in family law and related matters for nearly two decades.
Mills has also taken a steady role in legal education. He has taught continuing legal education seminars on family law and adoptions since 1999. That work put him in front of other attorneys and judges, explaining case law, procedure and statutory changes that affect family courts.
In 2018 he founded the Law Office of Bobby D. Mills, PLLC. The firm reflects the arc of his career: courtroom work, client counseling, adoption proceedings and the rules that govern family law practice in North Carolina. He maintains an office at 4600 Marriott Drive, Suite 200.
Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who relies on procedural knowledge and steady courtroom experience rather than on rhetoric. He has combined service in the JAG Corps with long-term practice in state courts. He remains active in the North Carolina legal community and in professional organizations tied to adoption law.
He currently practices at the Law Office of Bobby D. Mills, PLLC, handling family law matters including adoption cases and related proceedings in North Carolina.
