About Billie J.
Billie J. Guthrie built a career that crosses social work and law. She began in social services and later turned to law to tackle legal issues that affect people’s daily lives.
Her academic path started at Appalachian State University, where she earned a B.S. in social work in 1999. She stayed in the field and completed a Master of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003. A decade later she pursued legal training. She attended Pepperdine University School of Law’s London Programme in International Law and Legal Studies in 2010 and received a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2011.
Guthrie’s early legal work reflects that dual background. In 2013 she joined Carolina Disability Advocates as a disability lawyer. There she handled matters that required both legal knowledge and an understanding of clients’ social service needs. That combination informed her approach to casework: attentive to procedural detail and mindful of the practical effects of legal outcomes on everyday life.
After several years practicing in the disability field, she established Billie J. Guthrie, Lawyer at Law PLLC in 2022. The solo practice allowed her to shape how she served clients and to draw on her social work training when managing cases. In 2023 she joined Deuterman Law Group as a lawyer, bringing experience from both firm and solo practice settings. She is licensed to practice in North Carolina and has continued to work on matters arising under state and federal disability systems.
Colleagues describe Guthrie as methodical in preparing cases and direct in court advocacy. She has worked on administrative appeals, claims for benefits, and the counseling of clients through application and hearing processes. Her background in social work often surfaces in client intake and case planning, allowing her to consider medical, vocational, and psychosocial elements alongside the strictly legal ones.
Guthrie’s career shows a steady movement from social services to law, and then into roles that combine both skill sets. She has practiced in different settings — nonprofit advocacy, solo practice, and a larger firm — and has handled a range of procedural and substantive issues within disability law. Her current practice, based at Deuterman Law Group, emphasizes disability claims and administrative advocacy.
