About Bernis E.

Bernis E. Nelson built a legal career that began after she completed her law degree in 1980. She earned a J.D. from New York Law School following a B.A. from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1973. Those academic foundations led to work inside municipal governments and later to a steady private practice.

Early in her career Nelson worked for the Cities of Peekskill, Newburgh and New Rochelle. Those municipal positions gave her day-to-day experience in local government law. She also handled matters in private practice starting in 1980, balancing client needs against the procedural realities of courts and councils.

Nelson is admitted to practice in New York and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District. Her courtroom work and municipal roles intersect. She has handled issues that arise at the city level as well as related litigation that reaches the federal docket. That combination has shaped the way she approaches both transactional work and contested matters.

Her involvement in the professional community includes service on the New York State Bar Association’s Municipal Law Section Executive Committee. In that role she participates in committee meetings and contributes to programs aimed at practitioners who work in municipal law. Colleagues see the position as part of a steady public-law practice rather than a step into broader policy advocacy.

Nelson maintains an office under the name Bernis Nelson, Lawyer at Law. She continues to take on municipal clients and private matters, relying on decades of practice in New York courts and local government offices. Her day-to-day work covers municipal law questions, representation of local entities, and related civil litigation. She practices from that office and continues to serve municipal and private clients in New York and before the Southern District federal court. Her current practice focuses on municipal law and related civil litigation.
