About Bernard J.
Bernard J. Hamill earned his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1977. He entered the practice of law at a time when courtroom litigation remained central to many civil disputes. That early training at Suffolk set the foundation for a long career that has spanned state and federal forums.
He has practiced for more than four decades and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New York, and is admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Over the years he has maintained an active caseload in both trial and appellate courts. He is also involved with the American Association Of Justice, participating in its activities and programs alongside other attorneys who handle complex litigation.
Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who prefers direct preparation and thorough courtroom work. He has represented clients in a range of matters that required both trial presence and appellate briefing. His approach emphasizes careful factual development and clear legal argument. He prepares cases to be heard and decided at every level the dispute may reach.
Outside the courtroom he has kept up with developments in federal and state procedure and appellate practice. That attention to evolving precedent has informed the way he frames issues on appeal. He often works to identify the narrow legal questions that a court will need to resolve and then builds an argument that addresses those points plainly. He brings a practical eye to case strategy and an expectation that written advocacy will matter as much as oral argument.
He currently handles litigation and appellate matters in Massachusetts, New York and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. His practice remains centered on pursuing judicial resolution of disputes through trial and appeal.
