About Ben
Ben Cushman studied philosophy at Reed College, earning his B.A. in 1993 after beginning his undergraduate work in 1989. He stayed in the Pacific Northwest for law school, completing a J.D. at Lewis & Clark Law School in 1996 where he concentrated on environmental law. Those formative years set the tone for a career that has bridged regulatory and private-practice work across several states.
He entered private practice soon after law school and became a partner at Cushman Law Offices in 1996. That early partnership gave him front-line experience managing client files, courtroom appearances and the practical demands of running a small firm. Over time his work broadened beyond the local matters that occupy many small firms and came to involve issues that cross state lines and regulatory regimes.
In 2017 he joined Deschutes Law Group as a partner. The move put him in a larger firm context and expanded the range of matters he handles. Colleagues describe him as steady in litigation and methodical in preparing regulatory submissions. He has practiced under a variety of procedural rules and court settings, which helped him adapt when matters extended into neighboring states.
Cushman is admitted to practice in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and North Carolina. He maintains memberships in a number of professional organizations, including the North Carolina State Bar. Those multi-state admissions allow him to take on matters that involve more than one jurisdiction, a recurring feature of his caseload.
His legal background includes environmental law training from law school and decades spent in private practice. That combination informs much of the work he accepts. He has handled cases and client questions that involve state and federal regulatory frameworks, property and resource issues, and the procedural demands of litigation in different courts.
He is based at the Deschutes Law Group office and continues to practice there as a partner. His current practice centers on matters that draw on his environmental law background and his admissions across multiple states.
