About Ben
Ben Cooper builds his practice on steady courtroom work and an appetite for appellate questions. He trained at the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. in economics and bioethics in 2008 before returning to UVA for law school and receiving his J.D. in 2011. Those years in Charlottesville shaped his interest in complex litigation and the procedural side of law.
After law school Cooper began his career at Hogan Lovells as an associate in 2011. He spent that time learning how larger firms manage multi-jurisdictional cases and how to move matters through discovery and motion practice. In 2013 he took a clerkship on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. The clerkship gave him a close look at appellate decision-making and the drafting that influences outcomes at the circuit level.
In 2014 Cooper became a partner at Cooper & Elliott, LLC. He has represented clients in trial courts and on appeal, and he handles matters that reach federal circuit courts as well as state courts. He is admitted in the District of Columbia, Ohio and Virginia, and he is admitted to practice before the D.C. Circuit, the Fourth Circuit and the Sixth Circuit. That combination of admissions reflects a practice that moves between trial litigation and appellate briefing.
Collegial connections and professional memberships have been part of his professional life. He has been a member of the Ohio Association for Justice, the Ohio State Bar Association and the Columbus Bar Association since 2015. Those memberships provide a local bar network and resources for trial and appellate practice. He also maintains contacts in Washington from his time in D.C. and from federal appellate work.
Cooper approaches cases in a pragmatic, procedural way. He is comfortable drafting long-form briefs and arguing contested motions. He handles discovery disputes and prepares appeals, often weighing the tactical choice between developing a factual record and preserving issues for appeal. His courtroom work ranges from evidentiary fights to dispositive motion practice.
He continues to practice at Cooper & Elliott, LLC, where he represents clients in civil litigation and appellate matters. He currently concentrates his practice on trial litigation and appellate advocacy.
