About Barton
Barton Black trained first as an engineer and then as a lawyer. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2000 and a Juris Doctor from Mercer University in 2007. Those two degrees shape the practical, technical viewpoint he brings to legal matters.
He began his legal career at Alston & Bird LLP in 2007. As an associate there he worked on matters typical of a large national firm. In 2010 he moved to Swift Currie McGhee & Hiers, LLP, where he continued to develop skills in intellectual property and related commercial issues. Those years in larger firms gave him exposure to complex files and multi-lawyer teams.
In 2015 he launched Barton Black Law, LLC and serves as managing member. Starting his own practice shifted his day-to-day role. He took on leadership duties, client development, and the administrative responsibilities that come with running a small firm. He also retained hands-on work for clients, handling filings, client counseling, and case strategy.
He holds registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to the Georgia bar. That combination permits him to represent clients in patent prosecution before the Patent Office and to take on state-level matters in Georgia. His training at Georgia Tech and subsequent legal experience inform how he approaches technically oriented work.
Clients and colleagues describe his approach as pragmatic. He aims for clear patent drafting, careful prosecution, and practical advice on trademark issues and licensing. He has handled patent applications and managed portfolios for businesses that require coordination between legal strategy and technical teams. He also advises on enforcement and transactional questions that touch intellectual property.
Barton Black maintains a presence in Sandy Springs as well as a main office location. He manages a small team at Barton Black Law, LLC and continues to accept client matters that involve patents, trademarks, and related commercial concerns. He currently focuses his practice on patent prosecution, trademark matters, and IP counseling in Georgia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
