About Barbara J.
Barbara J. May earned her law degree from Hamline University School of Law in 1981. She completed a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies at Winona State University in 1978. Those academic years provided both substantive legal training and a practical foundation that informed her work in the years that followed.
Soon after law school she moved into practice in the Upper Midwest. She is admitted to practice in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Over time her work has taken her into courtrooms and meeting rooms across the region, handling matters that require an understanding of rules and procedures in two neighboring jurisdictions.
She founded and operates the Barbara May Law Office. The office serves individuals and small organizations. Cases handled at the firm reflect the everyday legal needs that arise in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the practice emphasizes steady, organized handling of client matters.
May’s undergraduate training in paralegal studies left a mark on how she runs cases. She applies that background to case preparation, document management, and client communication. The combination of paralegal and legal education gives her a practical perspective on the mechanics of litigation and transactional work.
Colleagues describe her as thorough in preparation and clear in explanation. She appears regularly in state court and advises clients outside the courtroom when an alternative path is appropriate. Her approach tends to favor careful analysis and practical next steps over abstract theory. That orientation guides how she evaluates options and communicates risks to clients.
After more than four decades connected to the law, she continues to practice from the Barbara May Law Office. She represents clients on matters arising under Minnesota and Wisconsin law.
