About Asa
Asa Hutchinson graduated from Bob Jones University in 1972 and earned his J.D. from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1975. He moved into public service early, combining roles in local government and federal appointments across a career that spans decades. His education laid the groundwork for a steady progression through both prosecutorial and executive positions.
Hutchinson began his legal career at the municipal level, serving as city attorney in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 1977. He then served as United States Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas in 1982, a role that put him at the center of federal prosecutions in the state. In 1990 he took on partisan leadership as chairman of the Arkansas State Republican Committee, and in 1997 he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2001 he became Director of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and two years later he accepted a senior post at the newly formed Department of Homeland Security as Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security. In 2015 he was elected Governor of the State of Arkansas.
Those appointments reflect experience across law enforcement, national security and state government. As a U.S. Attorney and later as DEA Director, he handled cases and policy decisions tied to criminal enforcement and interagency coordination. His DHS role involved oversight of border and transportation security programs at a formative time for the department. In elected office he moved from legislative duties to executive responsibilities, shaping state-level budgets, appointments and administrative priorities. His career mixes courtroom work, federal agency leadership and statewide governance.
Throughout his trajectory he maintained ties to Arkansas institutions and Washington offices. He has worked in both state and federal settings, frequently operating where legal practice intersects with public policy. That background gives him familiarity with federal prosecution, administrative structures and the mechanics of state government. He has appeared in roles that required managing teams, advising on enforcement strategy and making public-facing policy decisions.
As of 2026 he remains active in matters that draw on his government experience. His current work centers on government and public policy matters, drawing on decades of service at local, state and federal levels.
