Werchick earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California before graduating from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) in 1965.

His commitment to elder law became particularly evident during his tenure as Special Counsel to California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) from 2009 to 2015.
