About Ann

Ann Toney began her professional life in the helping professions. She earned a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of South Florida and then turned to law, receiving a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1983. That combination of clinical training and legal education shaped how she approaches client problems: practical, person-centered, and attentive to the human side of legal conflicts.

After law school she gained admission to the North Carolina bar in 1984. Her early years in the profession included bar membership in North Carolina and later expanded to Colorado. Today she holds licensure in both states. Those dual jurisdictions reflect a long career that spans geographic lines as well as areas of practice.

Toney’s memberships map out the questions that have occupied her work. She holds lifetime memberships in the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. She is active in the Colorado LGBTQ Bar and the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. Since 2023 she has been listed with a Human Rights Commission. These associations point to intersections between criminal defense, drug policy reform, and issues affecting LGBTQ people and women in the legal profession.

Her involvement is not limited to trade groups. Toney has maintained continuous standing with the North Carolina State Bar since 1984. In Colorado she belongs to the state bar and to the community of criminal defense practitioners that concentrates on trial work and sentencing advocacy. The memberships are practical as well as professional; they provide forums for case discussion, legislative monitoring, and continuing legal education.

Toney practices under the name Ann Toney P.C. The firm name appears on public listings and serves as the vehicle for her legal work. Her practice brings together her background in counseling and decades in the courtroom. She often handles matters that sit at the crossroads of criminal law, policy, and civil rights.

Colleagues describe her as someone who keeps current on shifting legal landscapes, especially in areas affected by changing marijuana laws and evolving protections for LGBTQ people. She balances courtroom advocacy with community engagement and agency work. Currently she operates Ann Toney P.C., where her practice includes criminal defense alongside representation touching on drug policy and LGBTQ-related legal issues.
