About Ann
Ann Groninger is a partner at Copeley Johnson & Groninger PLLC, a law firm with offices in Charlotte and Durham, North Carolina. She joined the North Carolina State Bar in 1995. The firm, located at 1018 East Blvd, Suite 6, Charlotte, NC 28203, focuses on personal injury, workers' compensation, bicycle accidents, and wrongful death cases across the state. She earned her Juris Doctor from Tulane University School of Law in 1994 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Arts from Michigan State University.
After law school, she began her career in 1995 as a criminal defense attorney with the Cumberland County Public Defender’s Office and later in private practice in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her criminal defense career included several death penalty trials, notably the first case in North Carolina where a jury considered a defendant's ineligibility for the death penalty due to intellectual disability. In 1998, she transitioned to private practice, focusing on personal injury and civil litigation. Her focus on cycling led her to co-found North Carolina Bike Law with Peter Wilborn, which has since evolved into Bike Law, serving cyclists nationwide.
She actively promotes cycling safety and rights, speaking at events like the North Carolina Bicycle Summit and authoring the "Ride Guide" to educate cyclists, drivers, and law enforcement on North Carolina's bicycle laws. Before forming Copeley Johnson & Groninger PLLC in 2011, she was a partner at Patterson Harkavy LLP. The firm has been recognized for its commitment to excellence and community involvement, with attorneys like Ann regularly contributing to legal education and public interest organizations. Ann is a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, serving on the Board of Governors and as past Chair of the Employment Section.
She is also a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, where she previously chaired the Employment CLE. Her community involvement includes coaching the High School Mock Trial Team and participating in organizations such as the League of American Bicyclists and the Charlotte Area Bicycle Association. She has been recognized in Super Lawyers for 13 consecutive years and has been a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).
