About Andy
Andy Cook began his academic journey in Vermont, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Vermont in 1984. He moved west to pursue law at California Western School of Law and received his J.D. in 1993. While in law school he competed on the Traynor Moot Court team, earning co-champion honors for brief writing and second place in oral argument. He also took part in National Moot Court competitions, experiences that sharpened his courtroom skills early in his career.
After law school, Cook established a private practice. In 1995 he opened the Law Offices of Andy Cook and has operated that practice since. Over more than two decades he has handled matters that arise out of family relationships. His practice has involved the familiar contours of family law: dissolution, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and related procedural questions. He is certified as a Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.
Cook is admitted to practice before multiple courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the California state courts. Those admissions reflect a willingness to carry cases into higher forums when circumstances require it. He has maintained an active membership in local and statewide bar organizations, which has kept him connected to developments in family law and practice management.
His service to the legal community spans several organizations. He has been a member of the San Diego County Bar Association since 1994 and served on its Board of Directors from 2013 to 2016. He has longstanding ties to his alma mater through the California Western School of Law Alumni Association, serving on its board from 1999 to 2002 and joining the school’s Council of Visitors beginning in 2017. He also holds memberships in the (California) Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association, Lawyers Club (San Diego), the Consumer Lawyers of San Diego and the California Lawyers Association.
Colleagues describe Cook as steady in court and deliberate in negotiation. He draws on his moot court background when preparing pleadings and arguments. Over the years he has balanced trial work with negotiated resolutions, depending on what the client and case demanded.
He continues to practice at the Law Offices of Andy Cook, handling family law matters and related proceedings in California courts.
