About Andrew John
Andrew John Chan built a legal foundation that begins in the classroom and extends into courtrooms and agency offices. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 2003, majoring in cognitive science and history and minoring in philosophy. He then completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Miami School of Law in 2007. While in law school he worked in several judicial and prosecutorial settings, gaining early exposure to litigation and public service.
Those early placements included a judicial clerkship with the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami in 2005 and internships and clerkships at the State Lawyer’s Office and the Office of the City Lawyer in Miami in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 he clerked for Neil M. Schuster, P.A., and in 2007 served as a California Bar certified student intern at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. He spent 2008 as a law clerk at Angelo & Banta, P.A. These roles gave him routine work in hearings, filings and legal research, and a sense for both trial procedure and case preparation.
After law school he moved into private practice. He was a lawyer at Berk, Merchant & Sims, PLC in 2009. Later he worked at Maurice Wutscher, LLP in 2015, and joined Ericksen Arbuthnot in 2016. Over the years he has handled matters that cross litigation, intellectual property, and transactional lines. His registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and a real estate broker credential obtained in 2018 reflect a mix of regulatory and commercial practice. He also maintains experience representing clients before federal trial courts.
He is admitted to practice in California and Florida and is registered at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He has been admitted to several federal courts, including the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of California (admitted 2015), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (admitted 2013), and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida (admitted 2012). He was admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2018. His professional affiliations include membership in the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada since 2019, participation in the Florida Bar Out of State Division since 2018, and past involvement in the American Bar Association Business Law Section from 2015 to 2017.
At Ericksen Arbuthnot he continues to represent businesses and individuals in federal and state matters. He maintains practice areas that include litigation, intellectual property matters before the USPTO, and real estate-related work. He currently concentrates on litigation, intellectual property counseling, and real estate matters.
