About Andrew D.

Andrew D. Leipold graduated from Boston University with a B.S. in Public Relations in 1982. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985. Those degrees set a path that moved quickly from courtrooms to classrooms.

Fresh from law school, Leipold clerked for Judge Abner J. Mikva on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1985. He followed that with a clerkship for Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. at the United States Supreme Court in 1986. The experience of working at two of the nation’s appellate benches shaped his early approach to legal reasoning and advocacy.

After his Supreme Court clerkship, Leipold spent time in private practice as a litigation associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in 1987. That period in firm life gave him practical exposure to courtroom work and case management. He later shifted into academia, moving from practice into teaching and scholarship.

Leipold has held visiting professorships at several law schools. He taught as a visiting professor at Duke University School of Law in 1997 and at Boston College Law School in 2000. Those short-term appointments allowed him to teach in different settings and to engage with varied faculties and student bodies.

In 2007 he was named the Edwin M. Adams Professor of Law at the University of Illinois College of Law. He has since been a fixture at the College of Law, balancing classroom teaching with research and writing. His career has combined high-level appellate experience, a spell in private practice, and a sustained academic trajectory. Colleagues and students know him for a direct, analytical approach in seminars and lectures.

Leipold remains active in legal scholarship and law school life at the University of Illinois College of Law. He teaches courses, supervises research, and contributes to the law school’s academic programs. He currently works in academia at the University of Illinois College of Law, concentrating on teaching and scholarship.
