About Alex
Alex Merchant built a steady academic track before entering law. Merchant earned a B.S. from Iowa State University in 2000 and an M.A. from the University of California in 2002. She completed her J.D. at Stanford Law School in 2007.
Merchant began her legal career as an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP in 2007. She spent her early years handling day-to-day client work and helping prepare pleadings and motions. That time offered exposure to high-volume matters and firm practice systems. Over the next several years she moved into private practice and later joined Elke & Merchant LLP as a partner.
At Elke & Merchant LLP Merchant has concentrated on housing-related matters. Her caseload often includes landlord-tenant disputes, eviction defense, habitability claims and lease negotiations. She represents individual tenants and tenant groups in contested proceedings and administrative hearings. Merchant’s approach tends to be practical and case-specific. She favors clear written advocacy and careful preparation for hearings.
Merchant maintains ties to the local housing law community. She holds current professional memberships and participates in community-based legal efforts in San Francisco. Outside of casework Merchant has handled policy-related intake and client counseling projects at the firm.
