About Alan
Alan Kendrick combines technical training in aerospace engineering with legal training in intellectual property and international law. He earned a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1998, completing coursework in Intellectual Property Law and International Law. Earlier degrees include a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from San Jose State University (1990) and an A.A. in Aviation from San Diego Mesa College (1985).
Kendrick began his professional life as an engineer. In 1991 he worked as a senior mechanical and aerospace systems design engineer for Jacobs Engineering/Sverdrup Technology, Inc. at Moffett Field. That period grounded him in mechanical design, systems integration, and the kinds of technical drawings and tolerancing practices that later proved useful in patent work.
He moved into law after completing his J.D. and spent time practicing in Europe. In 2001 he was listed as an intellectual property lawyer at Cermák Horejš Myslil – Lawyers at Law and Patent Lawyers in Prague. That experience included working across national systems and handling matters that required familiarity with both Czech and U.S. procedures.
Returning to the United States, Kendrick served as an intellectual property and engineering research analyst at Nerac in San Diego in 2011. He evaluated technical literature and supported patentability and prior art assessments for clients in a range of industries. In 2014 he established his practice at AKIP Legal in Laguna Beach, where his title is Intellectual Property Lawyer.
Kendrick holds certifications that reflect his hybrid technical-legal profile. He completed an International Practice program through the Center for International Legal Studies. He is a Solidworks Certified Associate (C-7XSWW8LBUM) through Dassault Systèmes and holds a GDT certification for ANSI Y14.4o. from the American Institute for Quality & Reliability. Those qualifications support patent drafting and analysis, especially for mechanical, aerospace, and design-centric inventions.
He is admitted to practice in California and to the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of California. He is also admitted in the Czech Republic, a credential that aligns with his earlier work in Prague. His practice combines technical assessment, patent prosecution, and opinion work on patentability and infringement. He currently practices intellectual property law at AKIP Legal in Laguna Beach, handling patent prosecution, patentability opinions, and related matters.
