About Alan B.

Alan B. Croft trained first as an engineer and then as a lawyer. He earned a B.S.E.E. from Washington University in St. Louis and later took his law degree from American University Washington College of Law. That combination of technical and legal training shapes how he approaches complex matters and courtroom strategy.

Early in his career he moved into public service. In 1972 he served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Lawyer in Arlington County. In that role he handled prosecutions and gained hands-on courtroom experience. The work required quick legal research, clear advocacy and day-to-day interaction with other parts of the criminal justice system.

After his time in public office he transitioned to private practice. He joined McCandlish & Lillard, P.C. and serves there as counsel. His responsibilities have included drafting pleadings, arguing motions and representing clients in contested hearings. Colleagues and clients have relied on him for steady courtroom presence and practical legal advice.

Croft is admitted to practice in multiple jurisdictions. He holds admission in Virginia and in the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Eastern District of Virginia and the U.S. District Court. Those admissions allow him to handle matters that move between state and federal forums.

Across his career he has combined trial-level work with appellate practice. He has experience managing cases through pretrial preparation and into hearings or trials. His background in engineering occasionally informs how he evaluates evidence and prepares witnesses for technical testimony. He approaches each matter by breaking it into discrete issues, then addressing those issues one at a time.

Today he continues his legal work in the private sector. He remains counsel at McCandlish & Lillard, P.C., where he handles litigation in both state and federal courts.
