About Adam J.

Adam J. Cole combines scientific training and legal training in a career that crosses chemistry, pharmaceuticals and patent law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan in 2004. He stayed at Michigan for a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, which he completed in 2011. He later turned to law and received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2019.

After finishing his doctorate, Cole moved into intellectual property work. In 2012 he joined Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as a patent agent. In that role he worked on patent preparation and prosecution for clients in technical fields. His scientific degrees supported work on chemistry- and biology-related patent applications and on technical analyses needed for filings.

Cole returned to law school in the mid-2010s and completed his law degree in 2019. Following graduation he took on an attorney role at Wilson Sonsini, listed as an associate beginning in 2019. The shift from patent agent to associate reflects a common path for scientists who pursue legal credentials to expand their role in litigation, counseling and transactional matters involving intellectual property.

His background bridges engineering, pharmaceutical sciences and law. That combination informs practical work on patent prosecution, claim drafting and freedom-to-operate assessments. He has handled matters that require translating complex scientific concepts into patent applications and office-action responses. Colleagues describe his work as grounded in technical understanding and oriented to procedural precision.

Cole’s practice sits at the intersection of life sciences and chemistry-related technologies. He works with inventors, in-house counsel and research teams on patenting strategies, application drafting and responses to patent offices. He is based at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and practices in California. His current practice focuses on patent prosecution and related intellectual property matters for pharmaceutical and chemical technologies.
