About Abhilash Thoppil
Abhilash Thoppil Mathai migrated from engineering into law over the course of two decades. His path began with a civil engineering degree and moved steadily toward international legal practice. The shift is visible in his academic record and in the roles he has taken since entering the legal profession.
Mathai holds an LL.M. in International Law from Stetson University College of Law (LL.M., 2024). He previously completed an LL.B. at Glocal University of Law (LL.B., 2019) after earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Engineers (B.S., 2006). That mix of technical and legal training shapes his approach to problems. He can read plans and statutes in the same way and often brings both perspectives to an issue.
He began practicing in India and moved into roles in the United States as his qualifications expanded. In 2019 he worked as a lawyer at Newton Law Fim, gaining courtroom and client-side experience. He served as a paralegal at The Legal Work in 2021, where he handled document preparation and research. Most recently he interned at Gulf Coast Legal Services in 2024, working on matters that exposed him to public-interest practice in Florida.
Mathai holds a Foreign Legal Consultant credential from the Florida State Bar. He is registered as a Florida public notary and as a loan signing agent through the NNA, and he is qualified to perform remote online notarizations. He is admitted to practice in India and maintains professional registrations that allow him to advise on cross-border issues involving Indian and Florida law. His certifications reflect an interest in transactional work and notarization services alongside traditional legal advice.
Colleagues describe him as steady and technically minded. He often draws on his engineering background when dealing with factual disputes that involve construction, infrastructure or technical specifications. That background also helps when reviewing contracts and regulatory filings that reference engineering concepts.
His recent work has included matters that require translation between legal systems. He has handled client intake, document drafting and transactional support across jurisdictions. He has experience in both small-firm and nonprofit settings, which gives him familiarity with the different demands of each environment.
Mathai now practices at Crest Legal Partner and holds roles as an advocate in India while also serving as a Foreign Legal Consultant in Florida. He continues to work on cross-border and transactional matters, combining legal training and technical subject matter in his current practice focus.
