About Aaron J.
Aaron J. Harshman took a steady path into law that began in the liberal arts. He earned a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2005. He later returned to Indianapolis to study law and received his J.D. from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2012.
His career has combined private practice and firm leadership. In 2019 he opened Harshman Legal, LLC, operating as the principal of a small practice and handling matters in state and federal forums. Three years later he joined a broader partnership and became a partner at Harshman Ponist Smith & Rayl, LLC in 2022. That move expanded the range of resources available to his clients and placed him in a multi-attorney environment.
He is licensed to practice in Indiana and in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Those admissions allow him to appear in both state and federal trial courts in the region. He is a current member of the Indianapolis Bar Association, which keeps him engaged with peers and local court developments.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in the way he prepares for hearings and trials. He tends to separate complex issues into manageable parts and work through them step by step. That approach shows in courtroom filings and in negotiations, where careful case management often shortens the timeline for clients.
Outside the courtroom he has overseen the administrative and business functions of small practice operations. Leading Harshman Legal required juggling client intake, case budgeting, and day-to-day management. Transitioning to a partner role meant shifting some of those responsibilities to focus more on client advocacy and on mentoring less-experienced lawyers at the firm.
Clients and opposing counsel see him as pragmatic. He sets clear expectations about process, timelines, and likely outcomes. He is also active in the Indianapolis legal community through the local bar association and through court appearances in the Northern District of Indiana.
As a partner at Harshman Ponist Smith & Rayl, LLC, he continues to represent individuals and businesses in matters that arise in Indiana state courts and in the federal district court for the Northern District of Indiana. His current practice concentrates on litigation and courtroom representation in those jurisdictions.
